D.I.A. · Diagnostic Internal Assessment

The problem is visible.
The cause often is not.

D.I.A. helps management understand and measure a business issue before deciding how to address it. It starts with observable symptoms and traces the evidence that may explain them.

When complexity slows the business

The symptom is operational. The cause may be systemic.

Processes, information and responsibilities interact. When performance declines, the most obvious explanation is not always the underlying cause.

01 / MEASURE

From perception to an observable issue

“We have too much inventory” becomes a concrete question: how much, what type and with what impact?

02 / TRACE

From symptom to contributing factors

A delivery delay may originate in forecasting, planning, materials, production or logistics.

03 / DECIDE

From hypotheses to evidence

Data is compared with how work actually happens to determine which explanations are supported by evidence.

What is D.I.A.?

Understand first. Then decide how to act.

A structured process for analysing a defined problem, without turning the diagnosis into a general business audit.

01

Define the question

We start with the issue raised by the client and turn it into a precise question, agreeing on the observed phenomenon and the scope of the analysis.

02

Gather and compare evidence

We bring together the information available: data, conversations with the people involved, processes and observations of how work actually happens.

03

Trace what drives the issue

The analysis considers functions and processes to the extent needed to understand the issue, while staying focused on the original question.

04

Provide a basis for decisions

Evidence is organised to clarify what is happening, which factors contribute and why the issue matters to the business.

What management receives

A clearer understanding of the issue.

The result is a structured, evidence-based understanding, with quantification where the data allows.

The observed issue

What is happening, how it shows up and the boundaries of the issue analysed.

Contributing factors

The causes and conditions identified in the analysis, distinguishing evidence from hypotheses.

The scale of the problem

A concrete measure and, where possible, an estimate of the financial impact.

A basis for the next decision

Information to decide whether to act with internal resources, investigate further or launch a project.

A clear scope

D.I.A. clarifies the problem. The next phase is a separate decision.

It is

A focused process

  • Guided by a business issue or an agreed question.
  • Involving the functions needed to understand the issue.
  • Based on comparing information, processes and evidence.
  • Designed to measure what can be measured.
It is not

A general audit or an automatic action plan

  • An assessment of people or a search for someone to blame.
  • A solution chosen before the problem has been examined.
  • A guarantee of a specific operational or financial result.
  • Implementation of the interventions; this can be considered separately.
Diagnosis and intervention are separate stages. The first is for understanding and measuring the issue; a possible next stage defines how to respond and deliver change.
